This hike makes a loop on the lesser-used trails of Powhatan Wildlife Management Area. Start at one of the three angler ponds here, then wander grassy tracks through rolling woods where you may see deer, rabbit, or turkey. Virginia’s wildlife management areas are underutilized destinations for central Virginia hikers. Powhatan is one such place and offers Richmonders a rural retreat, a country destination to take a walk in unbridled nature, perhaps to see a deer, rabbit, or turkey, as I have. Many urban hikers are reluctant to visit places because of the hunting that takes place.
