Chief Benge Scout Trail

Chief Benge Scout Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Mountain Fork and Little Stony Creek thread the mountains of Wise and Scott Counties in wild and unpredictable fashion. Sticking with them faithfully is the 15-mile Chief Benge Scout Trail, a trek that links the cool waters of High Knob Lake with 30-foot falls, rapids, and small pools on the Little Stony.

The trail follows old railroad grades at river level but makes several steep climbs up the ridges that make southwest Virginia such a rugged, wonderful place to hike. There is real variety of plants along this trail, from big-leaf magnolia to the huckleberries on the dry ridges. Bring a fishing pole and test stream waters or the wide Bark Camp Lake. With reliable water sources and only a few steep climbs, this hike is a highlight of any southwest trip."

After the huge winter storms of 09-10 the trail has not been maintained. Huge downed trees obscure almost every quarter mile (at least) and it takes a long time to work through all the brambles and tree branches. It is a slow journey. We stopped at Bark Lake but were informed it's even worse after that until you get to the Little Stony Creek section which is still maintained.

The trail was easy to moderate from the trail head as most of the way was down hill. The trail markings were hard to see at times but easy enough to follow due to the path being clear. Foliage was very beautiful and the temperature was ideal. The info given on trail.com was very helpful and appreciated. Thanks
