Norfolk Professional Review and Guide

"Along this walk, you will see the bustling central business district, the scenic waterfront, charming historic neighborhoods, and some of the other attractions that draw visitors and area residents to the city. Special attractions include: Historic homes, museums, shopping malls, harbor scenes, parks, watercraft.

Norfolk is a city of churches, and you will see many during this walk. Large trees shade St. Paul’s Church, which boasts a past as unsettled as that of the city. The red brick building you see today was built in 1739. However, the history of the parish goes back much farther, as indicated by the grave markers in the cemetery, some of which date to the 1600s."

I agree with other reviewer that the Waterside Mall is disappointing. In fact, the whole downtown section of this walk is a bit depressing, with lots of vacant buildings and closed businesses. I was hit up for change 3 times, and don't know if I'd feel too safe after dark. Downtown is in stark contrast to the Freemason and Ghent sections of the walk, where the upper-middle and upper class folks live, and have beautiful homes, some of them mansions. Part of the MacArthur Memorial is currently (Oct 2011) under significant construction. There is now a light rail system in Norfolk that crosses the path in several places, which you may want to use to visit to other parts of the city.
If in the area, would definitely recommend this walk. Make sure you see the MacArthur Memorial, tour the Moses Myers Home and eat at the Freemason Abbey...the SheCrab soup is award winning and it is awesome! Disappointing was the Waterside Festival Market, it boasts 75 shops and restaurants but that was before most went out of business. I would calculate it more as 3 restaurants and 10 shops. Overall, great way to walk around and see the sights without getting caught in traffic.
if you've never been to norfolk before this is a good first immpression. It takes you past most of the must see points of interest in an afternoon.
