Newport News Park

Newport News Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Newport News Park, an 7,700-acre preserve, is one of the largest municipal parks in America. The most heavily used parts surround Lee Hall Reservoir. Trails and dirt roads make possible a hike that at times feels remote, despite being set in the middle of a large city.

The White Oak Trail Discovery Trail leads away from the visitor center and transports you across long stretches of marsh and past Civil War battle fortifications. Near the turnaround of this 5-mile hike, there is a detour into adjoining Yorktown Battlefield, where the last major battle of the Revolution secured American independence."

"At 8,000-plus acres, Newport News Park is the largest municipal park east of the Mississippi, though large swaths are essentially untrammeled. The loop described here takes in both historical and ecological landmarks. It works well as an introduction for campers—or anyone else—looking to explore the outlying trail network. Before setting out, take a moment to visit the park’s Discovery Center, where you will find aquariums, terrariums, and related displays on park wildlife. In addition to maps, you can pick up a trail guide that corresponds to numbered posts along the way. Then begin your hike beside a historic marker noting the nowsubmerged Warwick River’s role in the Civil War. The first trail of this loop, the Twin Forts Loop, tells that story in detail." Read more

Hickory Hollow is an extremely pleasant walk more so than a hike. This is not to take away from the beauty of these trails. The environments one traverses through on this hike epitimise the very nature of the northern neck.
