Lower Hoop Hole Hike

Lower Hoop Hole Hike Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This hike is truly deserving of its National Recreation Trail designation. Start the adventure by entering the Stony Run canyon, crisscrossing the alternating cascade-and-pool-filled stream 11 times while ascending through a world of geological amazement where cliffs, boulders, and crags fashion a rocky picture. Next, stroll a pleasant upland vale before dropping along Hipes Branch, where more pools and falls await.

This hike, which explores the area between Craig Creek and Bald Knob, traverses a pair of gorges cutting their way from the heights of Bald Knob in the Rich Patch Mountains north of Roanoke to their mother stream, Craig Creek. You’ll be surprised at the exposed geology of these watersheds, as water and time have carved narrow passages between craggy cliffs, a sea of boulders, rocks, and pebbles contrasting in their stillness with the ever-descending crystalline streams."
