Sherando Lake Recreation Area

Sherando Lake Recreation Area Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"While living in the Shenandoah Valley for 20 years, I took Sherando Lake Recreation Area largely for granted. It was just a half-hour’s drive from my home, and I enjoyed visiting for a day of swimming, fishing, canoeing, or mountain biking but infrequently spent the night. In the course of compiling information for this book, however, I saw Sherando Lake in a new light when I compared it to other beautiful campgrounds across Virginia.

The name, Sherando, is thought to be a variant on “Shenandoah,” which is widely translated as “daughter of the stars.” And the campground here shines brightly as a possible destination for campers, not only because of its own offerings but also because of its potential as a base camp from which to explore this section of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Shenandoah Valley."
