This highly developed and popular paved path (with wheelchair access) explores a virtual mountain community. Mabry Mill, probably the Parkway’s most photographed site, is surrounded by historic structures and informative exhibits about the early Appalachian economy. How popular is this trail? One indication is that two Parkway trail map signs are posted: one oriented from the restaurant/ gift shop, the other from the overflow parking lot. But don’t let tour buses deter you. This trail features what is perhaps the Parkway’s most photographed site, Mabry Mill—a scene notoriously claimed by postcards from states other than Virginia. A stop here also impresses with what is surely one of the more complex systems of water flumes ever devised to feed an otherwise primitive water-powered facility.
