Sevenmile Mountain Ramble

Sevenmile Mountain Ramble Professional Review and Guide

"A ramble in the mountains? Yes, indeed. The Sevenmile Mountain Ramble, fortunately, goes around the mountain and not up it. One of the prettiest rides in the area, this ramble is also the most remote. Popular among Blacksburg cyclists, this ride rolls along scenic John’s Creek for the first half of the short ride.

A few hills will challenge beginners as the route swings around Sevenmile Mountain, then gradually slopes back down the valley to the village of Maggie. For those visiting Virginia Tech, this ramble makes a perfect getaway and is one of the easiest and most scenic rides in the area. Terrain: First half is flat to gently rolling. Several hills starting at midpoint of ride may challenge beginners. Last 5 miles are downhill or flat."

Beautiful scenery. Road surface is grainy and a bit punishing on a stiff road bike. Speeds on downhills over 30mph not recommended. The "middle" section has challenging hills but the long downhill over the last few miles makes it worth the effort. About two-thirds along the route a dog attacked and was driven off with a swift kick to the head.
