South River Falls Loop

South River Falls Loop Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Gravity plays a big role in this hike. Make an easy descent, and see South River Falls drop 80 feet over a rock face from a perched vista. Go farther and enjoy the view from the base of the falls.

You’ll have to fight the earth’s tug on your climb out of the South River watershed and back to the former mountaintop pastureland, but the falls are worth the climb. This is a rich wildflower area in spring."

"The valley of upper South River is quite scenic, with its rich wildflower habitat, northern hardwoods, and two impressive spots to view South River Falls dropping 83 feet over a rock face. Go farther and enjoy the setting from the base of the falls. You will have to fight the earth’s tug on your climb out of the South River watershed, back to the former mountaintop pastureland, but the falls are worth the scramble." Read more

"Descend—and then descend some more—to enjoy views of South River Falls, one of the loveliest in the park. Like many hikes in Shenandoah, South River Falls Trail starts with a descent and ends with a climb. The views of the waterfall, however, lend themselves to a long break before you head back uphill. In warmer weather, the base of the falls provides a nice spot for wading and relaxing. The blue-blazed trail starts next to the bathrooms at the South River Falls Picnic Area. Follow it into the woods, and quickly arrive at the intersection with the Appalachian Trail (AT). Go straight through the intersection, and keep following the blue blazes of South River Falls Trail. It descends along a fairly rugged path, with some decent stretches of rock hopping. In 1.0 mile, the trail arrives at the first view of the 83-foot waterfall. An outcropping gives a good vantage point, but the overlook is just a few steps farther down the trail. From here, catch a nice view of the falls as it plunges below." Read more
