Shenandoah Valley-Skyline Drive Classic

Shenandoah Valley-Skyline Drive Classic Professional Review and Guide

"This ride will allow you to explore two of Northern Virginia's most famous areas: the lovely Shenandoah Valley and the northernmost third of the 105-mile long Skyline Drive. You'll also start the rides less than 1 mile from Luray Caverns (540-743-6551), arguably the most famous caverns in the eastern U.S. Another attraction is historic Front Royal, where Stonewall Jackson fought a decisive Civil War battle, and where today the South Fork of the Shenandoah River is considered one of the finest canoeing streams in the East.

Terrain: ranges from rolling in the Shenandoah Valley to very hilly up to and along the Blue Ridge. There is one 4.7-mile long climb from Luray (altitude 400 feet) up to Skyline Drive (altitude 2,300 feet); subsequent climbing on Skyline Drive reaches a peak altitude of nearly 3,400 feet. During fall weekends, traffic can be heavy on Rte. 211 from Luray to Skyline Drive; it is generally light along Skyline Drive and in the Shenandoah Valley, excepting for moderate traffic along Rte. 340 back toward Luray."
