Millers Head

Millers Head Professional Review and Guide

"This pretty hike is convenient for the many folks who stay at Skyland during their visit to the park. The short hike starts from the Skyland complex and takes you to an observation platform with delightful views.

From the trailhead, begin your hike by walking up the gravel road from your car to the cement post at Millers Head Trail. This will take you to the summit of Bushytop Mountain at 0.2 mile. There you will see some large microwave dishes, part of the Skyland communication system. Along the way there are some good views, but none are as nice as the one from the Millers Head observation platform at 0.8 mile, at an elevation of about 3,460 feet."

"This is a short hike starting from the Skyland complex leads to an observation platform with delightful views. The Limberlost Trail has been designed to be ADA accessible and is the only such trail in the park. However, the path is certainly not limited to that use. The nearly level path is lined with mountain laurel. Until recently, it was also rimmed by ancient hemlock trees, some said to be 400 years old.

Sadly, the exotic insect pest known as the wooly adelgid, which sucks the stored food from the hemlock needles, wreaked havoc on Limberlost’s hemlocks. The oak trees in Limberlost have also suffered greatly due to gypsy moth invasions. However, wildflowers bloom in spring and summer; white pine, birch, and maple trees still flourish in this beautiful place. Limberlost is truly “the story of a changing forest.”"
