Hickory Hollow State Natural Area Preserve

Hickory Hollow State Natural Area Preserve Professional Review and Guide

"Count on a mile’s stroll through the re-created Colonial home and farm at George Washington Birthplace National Monument. Though merely a mile long, the noncontiguous nature trail is a pleasant addition, especially if you plan a picnic.

The interlaced trails at Hickory Hollow traverse a hilltop pine–hardwood forest, descend to marshy Cabin Swamp along the Corrotoman River drainage, and trace a gurgling brook though tunnels of laurel. You may find the latter stint reminiscent of the mountains—appropriate given that botanists have identified plants here found nowhere outside the Blue Ridge."

This is my favorite trail in the Richmond area. It is relatively easy, takes about 45 minutes to cover all the trails, and has a couple hills where you can break a little sweat for your work out. The historical signage is top notch, and the civil war trenches as some of the best I've seen. I rarely see anyone else while I'm there.
