Colonial Cruise

Colonial Cruise Professional Review and Guide

"The Colonial Cruise is a gentle ride through one of the most historic areas in the United States. Starting in Jamestown, the cruise takes the cyclist through the woods and farms of Virginia’s Lower Peninsula, a narrow strip of land bordered by the James and York rivers that witnessed the beginnings of colonial life in America.

Take a detour down Duke of Gloucester Street, the heart of beautifully restored eighteenth-century Colonial Williamsburg. Ride on the Colonial Parkway, one of Virginia’s most scenic bike routes. Then end the cruise back in Jamestown, where it all began nearly 400 years ago. Terrain: Mostly flat to gently rolling. Several short, steep hills will challenge beginners."

Great trip. Three notes: 1. New bike path parallels Rte 614 at the beginning. Take it to Rte 5, go left, and rejoin the route in the book. 2. Jolly Pond Rd is closed just after the left turn, but you can dismount and go around the barracades. There is a bridge about 1/2 mile down that looks like it no longer can bear cars. I walked over and resumed the route. 3. Agree with the other reviewer that the paving on Colonial Pkwy is discouragingly butt-numbing. All in all, very worth the effort, particularly if you take the easy side trip to York River State Park. If you're up for it, the loop around Jamestown Island in the National Park is a nice way to cool down, about 5 miles round trip.
This was really a wonderful route. It is pleasant nearly the entire way, but doesn't really get scenic until Williamburg and the Colonial Parkway along the James River. Unfortunately, the Colonial Parkway is paved with mixed stones which hurt the buttocks for 7 miles! I had to stop 8-10 times enroute because the mix of street signs and road numbers on the Trails map were inconsistent. The road number signs can be very small, so pay attention. Overall, it was a very enjoyable bike ride.
