R Garland Dodd Park at Point of Rocks

R. Garland Dodd Park at Point of Rocks Professional Review and Guide

"This short, well-trod loop passes diverse terrain: hillsides forested in mature hardwoods, the cattail-and-cordgrass marsh along Ashton Creek, and the wide Appomattox River on its way to meet the James. Located near Hopewell, the park is as convenient to Petersburg as to Richmond’s Southside.

More than a quarter-century old, the trail system at R. Garland Dodd Park at Point of Rocks (formerly just Point of Rocks Park) bears the signs of wear and tear. At least one wooden footbridge is dated 1980, the year the park opened, as are a few of the many, many carvings in beech trees along the trail. These names, initials, and professions of love suggest a popular weekending spot."

I walk this trail at least twice a month. It is very a comfortable hike for beginners and offers an opportunity for one to start and learn great hiking techniques. Bring binoculars.

We hiked the trail on a clear, sunny Saturday. The trail is mostly flat and traverses attractive land areas. The trail itself is partly on paved and unpaved forest roads and partly on woodland single-track. The trail markings and maintenance leave a lot to be desired. In several places, the trail and the blue blazes just disappeared; use of double blazes to warn of changes in direction was inconsistent; signage was very confusing and sent half of our crew on a 2-mile misdirection. The maps that the VDOF provides are very poor; the one in the guide is marginally better.
