Hone Quarry Recreation Area

Hone Quarry Recreation Area Professional Review and Guide

"The Hone Quarry Recreation Area lies at the foot of the Shenandoah Mountain on the western edge of the Shenandoah Valley. It’s west of the city of Harrisonburg near the charming Briery Branch community along VA 257. Pull off the paved road onto Forest Road 62 after passing the Hone Quarry picnic area, and you’ll arrive at the single loop containing the campground’s 10 sites.

The picnic area is popular among Rockingham County residents, but there are 23 grills and picnic tables, so you won’t have trouble finding a spot during the week. The campground is set among mature hemlocks with campsites separated by an understory of young evergreens. The thick vegetation and minimal number of sites means you’re likely to have ample privacy at Hone Quarry. Campers will find optimal seclusion during the week and outside of the busy summer months. The campground is a popular site for deer hunters in November, however, so plan accordingly. If you’re willing to camp with minimal facilities, you can enjoy pitching your tent throughout the year."
