Trayfoot Mountain–Paine Run Loop

Trayfoot Mountain–Paine Run Loop Professional Review and Guide

"This wilderness loop hike passes by Blackrock Summit, ascends Trayfoot Mountain, and crosses a number of beautiful creeks. This is one of our favorite hikes because it threads through such a variety of land features. Take plenty of water for this hike, particularly if it’s a warm day.

This hike begins at Blackrock Gap and climbs and reaches Blackrock at 1.3 miles, where it circles the jumble of rocks forming this spectacular mountain. Views from here are beautiful. At 1.4 miles the trail meets the Trayfoot Mountain Trail and dips between piles of boulders, where it levels for a short distance but quickly begins to climb to the summit of Trayfoot Mountain. After passing the summit of Trayfoot, the trail, which is generally level for about 0.2 mile, progresses along a ridge. The trail begins a sharp descent, passing back and forth across the ridge. About a mile from the summit (3.5 miles from the trailhead), the trail passes by a series of interesting rock outcroppings, then continues its general downhill course."
