Deep Run Park Hike

Deep Run Park Hike Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This hike takes you on a couple of the many short trails in Deep Run Park, including the quieter north end of the retreat. The paved path wanders through hickory-oak woods and near developed facilities before backtracking. Henrico County can pack a lot into their parks, and Deep Run Park offers a good example of this. Not only are there multiple trails here but also numerous other facilities.

The park offers traditional soccer fields, basketball courts, picnic shelters, and a very large recreation center used for meetings and such. The park also has a natural side, including a nature pavilion and boardwalk that leads to Deep Run, and
ponds. This hike takes a path that heads to the quieter north
part of the refuge before making a little mini-loop and then

"Shrouded in suburbs, Deep Run Park is a welcome retreat, and the throngs of families, dogwalkers, and couples who flock here on sunny weekends attest to its popularity. The centerpiece of Deep Run Park, nestled within Richmond’s sprawling West End, is a bilevel pond encircled by a paved trail. Couples stroll by as youngsters timidly cast breadcrumbs to a gaggle of Canada geese that has made a permanent stopover of the small pond. Rambunctious schoolchildren frolic on the playground uphill, and teens play three-onthree on the adjacent basketball court after class. Fitness-conscious suburbanites tackle the exercise trail on their way home from work, and after-dinner dog-walkers make their daily rounds."

This is a very well maintained trail that loops the Beaverdam lake. The trail is shady, flat and wide with gravel, bridges and docks affording views of the lake. There is a place where you can sign in when you enter and leave the park for saftey. The trail was not too crowded when we visited and this appeared to be a popular place to fish. You can rent canoes here. We saw interesting birds, insects, frogs and water plants.

The best thing about Beaverdam is how well maintained the trail is. Probably the most well-marked trail I've been on. This trail is perfect for the casual rider as well as those that want a little extra challenge. Beaverdam offers a well marked, very organized and beautiful bike ride, a real treat.
