A short hike takes you to Rocky Knob’s signature summit. Rocky Knob’s namesake summit is known for the area’s best views, especially of Rock Castle Gorge. There’s also a historical oddity. The shelter on the summit of Rocky Knob was an Appalachian Trail shelter before Parkway construction forced the trail far to the west. Head south out of Saddle Overlook; when the green-blazed Rock Castle Gorge Trail goes left to climb the peak, bear right onto the easy, red-blazed side trail that avoids the summit. Another red-blazed side trail goes left, but stay right. In 0.5 mile turn left; the green-blazed trail climbs to the crest of the ridge and has great views.
