Traces Trail

Traces Trail Professional Review and Guide

"A good leg stretcher offering photographic opportunities and
insights into local geology. Packing much into a short distance, this is a great hike for families with small children as well as for people who no longer hike as well as they once did. It should also appeal to anyone who has an interest in natural and cultural history.

Dogs are prohibited from this trail. Along the trail, you will see a lot of greenstone, a type of volcanic rock that was formed 800 million years ago. The deer exclosure was constructed in 1993, and you may be able to guess its purpose—particularly if you have hiked other park trails and seen many deer. In the mid-1930s heavy hunting almost decimated the deer population. Since then it has bounced back to the point that some wildlife experts fear the animals may be exceeding the capacity of their range."
