Holliday Lake State Park

Holliday Lake State Park Professional Review and Guide

"Traverse the bottomland valley along Holliday Creek and scan the marsh north of Holliday Lake for herons and swans. Then walk beside lichen-spotted rock outcroppings on a narrow hillside singletrack above the lake. Finish your loop by climbing away from the water and into mixed forest before returning eastward.

It may seem unlikely that these forested hills were rolling farms at the turn of the last century. The steep slope punctuated by rock outcroppings on the lake’s eastern shore contrasts sharply with the bucolic countryside you’ll drive through en route from Richmond. It wasn’t until the 1930s that the federal Resettlement Administration (later the Farm Security Administration) bought out local farmers hit hard by the Depression and allowed the land to revert to its former forested state."
