High Bridge Trail State Park

High Bridge Trail State Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"From its western trailhead, High Bridge Trail follows an old railroad bed through forests and farms. This bucolic stretch is particularly favored by equestrians and cyclists. As the trail approaches and bisects Farmville, joggers and walkers are more the norm.

After skirting Farmville’s historic downtown, the trail crosses the Appomattox River and soon enough returns to a forested corridor. After a final road crossing at the River Road trailhead, the path continues southeast to its namesake High Bridge. This towering railroad trestle also crosses the Appomattox. As of this writing, however, the trail across the bridge was not complete, so hikers must settle for the view from below."

High Bridge Trail State Park is a great spot for mountain biking and hiking with lots of different trail options. It's one of the longest recreational trails in the country and since it's an old railroad trail it's relatively flat and easy. The highlight is the High Bridge over the Appomattox River. You can walk or ride along the bridge, which is part of the trail, and get some amazing views of the river and Virginia countryside.
