Cumberland State Forest

Cumberland State Forest Professional Review and Guide

"This ride's general location is 35 miles west of Richmond and just north of Farmville. Scenery includes dense woods, cut-over areas, and open fields. This loop starts and ends at Winston Lake in Cumberland State Forest just outside the perimeter of Bear Creek Lake State Park. This loop includes 5.5 miles along the largely single-track Willis River Trail before returning on gravel roads back to Winston Lake.

Those who live for single-track may want to ride the entire 15 mile point-to-point Willis River Trail. The loop includes some climbs that will get your heart-lung machine earning its keep. Novice riders may find the stretch along Willis River Trail somewhat difficult, but they can use a map of the Cumberland State Forest to develop alternate routes using state and forest roads."

Good for walking, but gravel road not good for biking...very steep hills. In some parts for advanced hikers. I walked my bike a lot.
