Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This one-way hike contains some moderate and a few strenuous segments before it concludes at the Loft Mountain Campground.

Let’s say members of your group are tired of hiking and that they hanker to spend the day in camp relaxing. Nevertheless, someone would be willing to drive a short distance and help with your logistical dilemma. What that means to you, the hiker, is that someone can make a fifteen-minute drive and you can walk back to the campground on your own schedule, or they could meet you at the store/dining area on Skyline Drive at Mile 79.5.

The hike begins from the south side of the Ivy Creek Overlook and immediately provides you with access to the Appalachian Trail. The trail begins with a slight descent amid sassafras, laurel, oak, and pine. The trail begins to ascend, then makes several switchbacks, passing by several large boulders. The trail continues its climb, providing beautiful views to the east of Loft Mountain. In late summer the trail is flanked by mint, goldenrod, and yellow daisies. In the winter the trail is open and spacious and provides unending views."

This was a nice trail with a great view that was near the Loft Mtg campground and was perfect for a short before dinner hike after we unloaded and set up camp.

"This out-and-back hike contains some moderate and a few more challenging segments before concluding at the Loft Mountain Campground. The hike begins on the south side of the Ivy Creek Overlook. Turn south onto the AT and begin a gradual descent amid sassafras, laurel, oak, and pine. The trail then begins to climb and makes several switchbacks, passing by several large boulders. Soon, there will be beautiful views to the east of Loft Mountain. In late summer the trail is flanked by mint, goldenrod, and yellow daisies. In winter the trail is open and spacious and provides seemingly unending views."
