Hawk Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This is one of the nicest free national forest campgrounds I’ve seen anywhere. Situated in the most northwestern slice of the George Washington National Forest, it seems to have been forgotten. But it hasn’t been left to fall into disrepair. Quite the contrary, the campsites were just as good as a pay campground; the pump well and vault toilets were fine; the picnic area and group campground were also in good condition. It’s hard to believe this campground is free.

Great North Mountain, the dividing line between West Virginia and Virginia, rises just a few miles east. Hawk is set on a flat of the mountain slope. A little stream runs nearby, but this is an upland forest with a western exposure, hence all the oaks."
