Virginia Creeper

Virginia Creeper Professional Review and Guide

"If there was only one rails-to-trail, the nearly 33 miles (64.6 miles total) of the former Virginia-Carolina Railroad would have to be it. The scenery is beautiful to see as well as to hear. For much of the way, the grade follows water roaring over boulders in the stream bed.

The most scenic of these, Whitetop Laurel Creek, offers bikers packing along a fly rod a great opportunity to fish. No train has used the bed for over 20 years, so trees have begun growing over the trail to form a solid canopy in many places. You'll pass through farms, even yards. Cows graze nearby. The trestles spanning the creeks are so high above the water that acrophobics should, perhaps, be led across with blinders."
