Calf Mountain, Skyline Drive Mile 995

Calf Mountain, Skyline Drive Mile 99.5 Professional Review and Guide

"A pleasant hike to the top of Calf Mountain, winding
through old pastures and some new-growth trees. This short climb up Calf Mountain is delightful, partly
because the trail winds through old meadows rather than
through woods, giving you a chance to see"

Hiked from the parking lot to the top of the mountain and camped on the bald field. It was freezing cold with a strong wind. The hike up was short but exhausting, it was also my first 'backpacking' trip, and my pack was overloaded. The view from the top was great, but the fire restrictions (which we ignored) were annoying. Shenandoah NP is simply to strict. Need to get rid of the permits and fire restrictions, especially for back country campers.

Never found the trail described. When you go through the v-gate on the east side of the parking lot, the only visible trail takes you on the Appalachian Trail. That portion of the Appalachian Trail is all wooded. We definitely didn't spot the open meadows or new growth trees (with the exception of the first part of the hike up to the woods). We did hike about 4 miles on the Appalachian Trail though and that portion is quite beautiful and relatively easy.
