Bear Den Mountain

Bear Den Mountain Professional Review and Guide

"A leg stretcher to the Bear Den Mountain summit (2,885 feet), offering spectacular views. Walk directly across Skyline Drive (west) from the Beagle Gap parking lot and proceed through the opening in the iron gate with a white blaze on a wood post.

Look northwest for views of the Shenandoah Valley. Following the Appalachian Trail (blazed on rocks), the trail ascends gently through an old meadow. After about 0.2 mile a road intersects the AT; cross it and follow the AT. The ascent leads 353 feet to the summit of Bear Den Mountain."

This is a nice short, easy hike with rewarding views from the top. The only downside are the radio towers at the top. Fall 2007 sees the addition of a radio tower for the VA State Police. While these towers don't take away from the great views of mountain ranges in the distance, the construction equipment and noises are a distraction. Before reaching the end of this hike as described in the trail guide, there is a side trail off to the left. This leads to a meadow with a beautiful view to the east. We also encountered a good size buck feasting in the meadow. This hike is definitely worth the limited effort!
One of our favorite hikes in the Shenandoah NP. The trail follows part of the AT and is very easy to do and very accessible. Only about five miles into the park from the Rockfish Gap entrance, this is a great place to go when you just need to get away for a couple hours. You can walk for hours along the At if you want, or you can travel .5 miles from the parking lot and sit atop a mountain meadow. A great place for flying kites, reading a book, journaling in the woods, or a picnic with your spouse. Very easy to do, with the option of adding many miles if you continue down the AT.
