Iron Gate Professional Review and Guide
"While not a destination area, the crags near Iron Gate afford locals the option of a quick dose of climbing when a longer drive to one of the nearby world-class areas isn’t possible. Few climbers outside of the surrounding towns, such as Roanoke, Blacksburg, Lynchburg, and Harrisonburg, are likely to ever visit here—and if they do, they might be disappointed they didn’t keep driving to climb at the New River Gorge or Seneca Rocks. Make no mistake, there is some good climbing to be had here, but the rock quality is not the best, and the many mixed-gear routes might be a turnoff for some. Compounding the mediocre feel of the area are the poor approach trails and highway noise. Still, there are a few really good climbs to pull down on, including Mind Games (5.10a), the 15-foot Clown Attack (5.11d) roof, and the area testpiece, Ganja (5.12b/c)."
