Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area Professional Review and Guide

"The mostly flat 5,217 acres of Chickahominy WMA do not include a trail along the namesake river. Nevertheless, a network of grassy doubletrack offers multiple out-and-back options, and gravel roads provide access to verdant Morris Creek and the wide Chickahominy River. This rustic hike can be paired with the more civilized Virginia Capital Trail (see page 138) for a great day trip.

The Chickahominy River takes its name from a Native American tribe that still resides in
the area. The correlation with hominy is no accident—the tribe was named for its dietary staple of pounded corn."

This trail is flat and wide with several spurs worth exploring. There is a power plant with a large smoke stack here which is strange to see among all the natural beauty. Not all views feature the power plant, and you cannot hear or smell the plant from the park. This is a great place for bird watching, hiking, biking, running, fishing and duck hunting. The nearby Henricus Historical Park (admission fee) is worth visiting if you like history. To the left of Henricus Historical Park is a path leading to a point on the river where you can view the Varina Enon-Bridge. When I visited the trail in May the water table was higher creating many interesting swampy areas. There is a small island on the lake where I noticed campers when I was kayaking. You can definitely find moments of solitude on this trail, espeically on the spurs.

Good trail to break in new shoes. Mostly a bike trail. Sandwiched by industry. Not 6 mile loop as one side is closed down. More like 4.5, maybe 5 if you hit all the observation trails. Not a lot of incline. A fit walker/hiker could do this in just a smidge over an hour. Watch for snakes.
