If you are looking for a beautiful destination and an extended hike, take the Old Mill Bicycle Trail, which wanders through Pocahontas State Park while circling Third Branch and Beaver Lake. The well-marked loop has plenty of hills, which add to the challenge. Pocahontas State Park is a large state park. The developed recreation area covers but a small portion of the destination, and the rest is managed as forestland. However, the demand for trails in the greater Richmond area has grown and the park has responded, opening many of the old forest roads for trail use and establishing the Old Mill Bicycle Trail in the developed area of the park. Hikers are welcome, though the trail was created for bicycles. The balloon loop travels through thick forest then circles around Third Branch and Beaver Lake, intersecting many other developed trails in the park. The loop also goes on and off numerous forest roads. However, the route is clearly signed at every junction, and you should have no concerns following the trail.
