Charles City County, VA Professional Review and Guide

"There’s no city in Charles City County. Its unique location between the James and Chickahominy Rivers makes it one of those rare places where you can leave the stress and pressure of business life far behind, if only for a day. The English established Charles City County in 1616, and westward expansion began. Those early settlers, sustained by the burgeoning tobacco industry, prospered and grew rich, though at great cost to the Indians. Plantations and farms sprang up all along the James River.

Against all odds, the gracious homes and mansions survived the rigors of the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the Civil War that devastated the area around Richmond and Petersburg to the west. Today, many of the old stately homes are open for visitors. The county’s extensive timberlands, tidal waters and thousands of acres of richly cultivated farmland are also preserved in this historic rural community. As there is no city, the heart of Charles City County is its early 18th-century courthouse – a cultural link between past and present.
