Buchanan to Blacksburg Mountain Streams and Valley

Buchanan to Blacksburg: Mountain Streams and Valley Professional Review and Guide

"This 70-mile drive, almost entirely within Jefferson National Forest, follows twisty Craig Creek surrounded by peaks of the Allegheny Mountains. It then climbs into the mountains and traverses an unspoiled farming valley virtually all the way to the end of the drive at Blacksburg. The narrow, two-lane road follows the Upper James River and one of its twisting tributaries upstream between the peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Then, in a dramatic change of pace, the drive climbs over the ridgeline and passes through a small valley between the ridges.

The drive concludes in a short stretch of four-lane highway ending in the city of Blacksburg, home of Virginia Tech (Virginia Polytechnic Institute, or VPI). Special attractions: Unspoiled, clear mountain streams, scenic mountain vistas, curvy roads, and very few towns. This drive appeals to those who want a mountain drive with no tourist distractions or towns. Most of the drive is along a designated Virginia Scenic Byway."
