Mountain Lake Challenge Professional Review and Guide
"Don’t let the mileage for this ride fool you. This Mountain Lake ride is a challenge. In fact, Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong used this very same climb to establish a strong lead in the 1996 Tour Dupont. This challenge, designed for the strong cyclist, offers a pleasant warm-up as the route follows Spruce Run on its way down to the New River.
If you’re not warmed up by this point, you’ll surely be in the next 10 miles as you climb more than 3,200 feet up Salt Pond Mountain. You have a chance to rest those aching legs on top at beautiful Mountain Lake Resort. Overlooking one of only two natural lakes in Virginia, this charming resort built from native stone is popular as the site of the movie Dirty Dancing. It’s unlikely, however, that after this climb you will be doing any dancing, dirty or otherwise. Terrain: Extremely challenging ascent. Technical descents. Several easy, relaxing stretches."
