Tuscarora–Overall Run Trail Loop

Tuscarora–Overall Run Trail Loop Professional Review and Guide

"This long hike passes two beautiful waterfalls, with several very steep descents and ascents.

It’s a good idea to be in shape and have lots of energy for this hike. The trail passes two beautiful waterfalls, but if the season has been a dry one, the falls could be reduced to merely a trickle. The trail also offers views of Massanutten Mountain and beyond. Note: On some older maps, the Tuscarora Trail used to be called the Big Blue Trail.

Begin this wilderness journey at the Mathews Arm Campground from the start of the Traces Trail. Follow the Traces Trail for about 0.4 mile to the first cement post. Stay on the trail (right) to the next cement post at interpretive sign 9. Go right and ascend to the next cement post. Turn left onto the Tuscarora-Overall Run Trail (blue blazes)."

The hike begins mostly downhill until you start to hear the rushing water getting louder and louder, and soon you turn a corner and you are struck with the beautiful sight of the 93 foot waterfall and the valley below. Since I went in the winter, I was able to enjoy this lovely sight to myself, and boy was it worth it. But of course the hike is not over, and soon you deal with the strenuous ascent which still had my "dogs" barking after a few days. Wonderful hike and I'd recommend it to anyone.
