Stayed in Leesburg and rode on parts of this 3 days in April. Leesburg to Purcellville is nice. Scenic, shaded, gentle uphill. The only negative is that all the scenic farms that line the trail are being subdivided and replaced with big showy houses. So go now, before it's all built up. Development is such a big deal that there is a movement to create a separate county around Pucellville that wil oppose development and keep it more rural. Friendly bike shop at the end of trail in Purcelville, they locked up my bike for me so I could go have lunch. Recommended side trips off the trail: riding Dry Mill Road downhill from Clarkes Gap back to Leesburg. Also leaving trail from Clarkes Gap and riding down to Waterford (narrow road with fast traffic but a nice ride). Waterford is a scenic quaint colonial town. Wanted to take back road to Leesburg but it was dirt so had to retrace. Nice bike shop in Leesburg (cue sheets, local info). The trail east of Leesburg is less scenic like the guide says.
