Columbia Island

Columbia Island Professional Review and Guide

"Beginning at Theodore Roosevelt Island, this hike is a modified loop to maximize views and stops at points of interest along Columbia Island. Hidden in plain sight, the island lies on the Potomac River across from the Lincoln Memorial. Often mistaken for part of Virginia, it offers sweeping views of some of Washington’s most iconic landmarks.

This hike is a 4.5-mile counterclockwise loop that follows much of the perimeter of the mostly flat island. It crosses heavily traveled and high-speed roadways, so be vigilant. Starting from the parking-lot trailhead at Theodore Roosevelt Island, march to the lot’s south end, and proceed on the mostly paved Mount Vernon Trail."
