Fort Hunt Park and Mount Vernon Trail

Fort Hunt Park and Mount Vernon Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The hike starts with a loop through Fort Hunt Park and then leads to an out-and-back excursion on the Mount Vernon Trail, providing hikers with a lovely parkland outing along the Potomac River.

This 7.6-mile, mostly out-and-back, level hike uses the trail’s lowermost portion. That’s where the southbound Potomac River turns west and the Virginia riverbank becomes a picturesque corridor of open parklands, woods, and across-the-water views. The hike also includes part of Fort Hunt Park. Located on former Washington-owned land, the fort existed from the 1890s to about 1920 to guard the river approach to the capital. It was converted into a park in the 1930s. This is a busy hiker-biker trail; stay to the right and yield to bicycles."
