The Bingham Canyon Cruise is a 14.8-mile out-and-back ride that starts in a pleasant West Jordan neighborhood, ascends Bingham Canyon to the Kennecott Copper Mine gate, then turns around for the descent and return to the start. Bingham Canyon, in the southwest corner of the Salt Lake Valley, is home to the largest open copper mining pit in the world. The pit can be seen from outer space. Mining began in Bingham Canyon in 1863. Gold, silver, and lead were extracted initially, but the attention turned to copper in 1906. The mine has since yielded a total of twelve million tons of copper. To access the mineral, deeper and deeper cuts have created a pit that was 2.5 miles in diameter and 0.5 mile deep as of this writing. The pit is the world’s largest excavation and is a National Historic Landmark.

This is a easy going ride. It took me about 45 minutes to an hour to do the full ride. Good: 1) This is an easy going ride with minimum but steady elevation gain 2) Traffic eases as you ride more towards the mine. Not so good 1) You are riding with cars in a 55 mph zone. This means you have to be careful. Cars are normally respectful of riders. 2) Narrow bike lanes with possible junk. Be careful while riding. Overall 1) A good ride. I enjoyed it.
