Silver Island Mountains Drive

Silver Island Mountains Drive Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This Bureau of Land Management (BLM) National Back Country Byway loops around the base of a so-called island range of jagged volcanic peaks, some bearing the names of such land-speed legends as John Cobb, Sir Malcolm Campbell and “Terrible” Teddy Tetzlaff.

It’s a convenient side trip off I-80 and is particularly beautiful in the light of late afternoon. Roads spur from the main loop road into Jenkins, Cave, Silver Island and Donner canyons. From these spurs, hikers can access ridges that lead to the main peaks. It’s best in spring and fall."

"The Silver Island Mountains Loop begins and ends on Northern #10: Wendover to Lucin Trail. This 49.4-mile trail makes a clockwise loop around the Silver Island Mountains and through a desert environment. As you drive along the remote and barren trail, keep an eye out for the old shoreline of Lake Bonneville, which is marked by an eroded line along the side of the mountains where ancient waves once lapped. Special Attractions: Easy but remote trail along the old shoreline of Lake Bonneville; Wonderful, unusual scenery, from the dead-flat desert and mud flats that were once the bottom of Lake Bonneville to the mountains that jut 6,000 feet skyward; Dozens of side trails to explore; Historic route of the Donner-Reed Party. This trail is graded dirt but suitable for a normal passenger vehicle. It usually has gentle grades, is fairly wide, and has very shallow water crossings (if any)."
