Right Fork Zion National Park

Right Fork (Zion National Park) Professional Review and Guide

"A long, out-and-back day hike or short backpack up the canyon of the Right Fork to Barrier Falls. This route offers a primitive backcountry experience in a rugged landscape of stark buttes and steep-walled canyons. The high points of the trip are the many picturesque waterfalls near the end of the hike.

Walking is fairly easy in the lower reaches of the drainage, but becomes quite challenging above Double Falls. Beyond this point, expect lots of scrambling over piles of rock that have fallen from the sheer walls of the canyon. The hike ends at Barrier Falls, which has a slippery headwall that cannot be negotiated without mountaineering gear. A few hardy souls have been known to rappel down the upper reaches of the canyon from above, a feat that requires plenty of rope and a high level of climbing expertise."

The rock face you have to scramble down at the beginning is very challenging, near impossible with a heavy pack. In spring, crossing the creek at the beginning of this trail can also be challenging. Make sure you cross the right fork early because the trail is on the right, you should not cross the left fork unless you cross back over soon. We had miles of difficult cross-country while looking for the trail. Nice wildlife, TONS of frogs everywhere. No mosquitos!
