Northgate Peaks Zion National Park

Northgate Peaks (Zion National Park) Professional Review and Guide

"A short day hike to an overlook between the Northgate Peaks. This trail offers an easy day trip with fine scenery, but it receives relatively little use because of its location in a remote corner of the park.

The trek begins in the shadow of Pine Valley Peak, a lone pinnacle of bone-white Navajo sandstone. The path heads eastward across open sage meadows; soon a sprinkling of pines rises to either side. Upon approaching the compact mass
of Pocket Mesa, the path veers southward and the pines coalesce into a gladed woodland."

This was a very short and easy hike. The mileage was mis-stated in the description. It is 2.2 miles ROUND-TRIP, not one-way. If you're looking for a very level hike, this is it! The trail is well maintained, very easy to follow, and leads to an impressive overlook.

This was a great 'recuperative' hike after doing the full 17 mile Zion narrows trip the day before. Aching knees were soothed by a flat, soft trail that leads to a dramatic visual payoff. The finish offers a lava rock perch with views of North Guardian angel framed by the Northgate peaks. A great hike for kids or hurting adults.
