Sego Canyon

Sego Canyon Professional Review and Guide

"Like the Crystal Geyser outing, this 16-mile out-and-back offers a nifty opportunity to warm up to the hot and challenging rides around Moab. Technically easy (surfaces are either paved or hard-packed dirt/gravel) and—thanks to a steady uphill—aerobically moderate, the ride passes through Thompson Canyon before entering Sego Canyon. Both canyons are deep gashes in the rugged and largely inaccessible Book Cliffs and Roan Cliffs.

Beginning amid stark slopes and scrub-brush flats, things turn attractive in the protected and ever-higher confines of the canyons, where bluffs of pale sandstone prevail. The slopes near Sego ghost town are covered in sage, and trees thrive in the bottoms. Juniper-piñon forest predominates at the higher elevations.General location: North of I-70 in Thompson Springs, 6 miles east of the Moab exit."
