Zion National Park Angels Landing

Zion National Park: Angels Landing Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This classic day hike runs up a narrow canyon and along a formidable knife-edge ridge to a giant monolith with mind-boggling red-rock views.

Few trails have as fitting a name as Angels Landing. The eagle-eye view over Zion Canyon from the crest of this 5,790-foot exposed rock fin is heavenly—and acrophobic hikers might need to summon a guardian angel for bravery. It’s also the most popular day hike in Zion, and justifiably one of the top hikes in the entire national park system.

Start out along the West Rim Trail, 2 miles of mellow paved trail shaded by tall cottonwoods that follow the burbling Virgin River. These groves provide shelter for frogs, chipmunks, flowering manzanitas, and multiple bird species. Before long, the path kicks upward in a hurry, leaving the river valley via steep switchbacks that cut into canyon walls of pink Navajo sandstone. Don’t forget to look up: Endangered raptors like California condors and peregrine falcons soar above the towering cliffs."
