This is a short day hike to an overlook between the Northgate Peaks. The trek begins in the shadow of Pine Valley Peak, a lone pinnacle of bone-white Navajo sandstone. The path heads eastward across open sage meadows; soon a sprinkling of pines rises to either side. Upon approaching the compact mass of Pocket Mesa, the path veers southward and the pines coalesce into a gladed woodland. In the midst of the savannah, the trail reaches a junction with the Wildcat Canyon Connector Trail; turn left here. After an eastward jog of 0.1 mile, you’ll see a signpost marking the spot where the Northgate Peaks Trail breaks away to the south.Turn right and follow the path to the top of a rise, where a well-beaten spur splits to the left.
