This is a must-do for anyone visiting Zion. This alternative trail to Observation Point is an easy option for those hikers that want to avoid a steep climb on Observation Point Trail. The trail starts with an impercetptable 300 foot climb over the first 2.25 miles. The trail then drops 300 feet over 0.8 miles to the intersection with the Observation Point trail. Observation Point offers a spectacular view into Zion Canyon with minimal effort. In June it was warm but the trail offers many shady havens to admire the beautiful surroundings. We saw many wild flowers in bloom and we were fortunate to catch a pear cactus in full bloom. The day we hiked, we had Observation Point to ourselves for the whole time we spent having lunch. being entertained by chipmunks and awed by the views. This trail is far enough off the beaten path that it gets much less traffic than the hikes in the canyon. The roads to the trailhead are well marked. At the Y in the road (you'll know it when you see it), bear left and there are parking spots on either side . Head to the fence and follow it to the left for the trailhead. My gps clocked a round trip distance for the hike to be 6.9 miles.
