Silver Reef

Silver Reef Professional Review and Guide

"The Silver Reef tour travels along a broad bench of juniper, pinyon, and ponderosa pine that separates the Pine Valley Mountains from deep, redrock canyons. The route affords scenic vistas of sandstone temples and majestic peaks of distant Zion National Park, including the Guardian Angels and Towers of the Virgin. Stop occasionally, especially at the route’s higher points, to catch over-the-shoulder glimpses of this famed gallery of sculpted rock. Overhead, rugged slopes of the Pine Valley Mountains Wilderness Area contrast with checkerboard swirls etched into sandstone canyons below.

Toward the route’s end, looming red cliffs above Warner Valley and the cultivated fields east of Washington are in view. The final descent to St. George is highlighted by miles of rock-hopping, from juniper and pinyon communities, to sagebrush country, to steaming desert prairies. The route begins on a light duty dirt road rising up from Silver Reef. The midsection traverses a pebbly packed dirt doubletrack. The ride culminates on a light duty dirt road with gravel and rock."
