Smithsonian Butte Back Country Byway

Smithsonian Butte Back Country Byway Professional Review and Guide

"A 9-mile Type I byway that climbs above the spectacular Valley of the Virgin River in southwestern Utah. The byway offers fabulous views of Zion National Park. This 9-mile-long byway climbs steeply out of the Valley of the Virgin River at Rockville, 4 miles west of Zion National Park in Utah’s far southwestern corner. Its upper reaches offer panoramic views of Zion’s gleaming buttresses, buttes, and temples. Coupled with a 2-mile spur to the ghost town of Grafton, the byway makes an excellent short excursion for visitors to the national park.

The road, with 1 mile of pavement and 8 miles of graded dirt, is passable to two-wheel-drive vehicles in good weather. The road is also a Utah Scenic Backway. Special Attractions: Scenic views, picnicking, ghost town/movie set of Grafton, hiking. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more."
