Coalpits Wash Zion National Park

Coalpits Wash (Zion National Park) Professional Review and Guide

"A route through Zion's southwest section ending in Upper Coalpits Wash. This route takes the hiker through some of the delicate painted-desert terrain located in the southwest section of Zion National Park. This portion of the park was formed during the Triassic Period, 200 to 230 million years ago. During that time the region was a low-lying plain covered by shallow seas.

Early in the Triassic Period, marine and mud deposits consisting of gypsum, limestone, shale, and siltstone were laid down. Today these form the Moenkopi Formation, characterized by the pastel bands of orange and white that form the painted desert. A fire burned through this area in 2006, eliminating much of the piñon-juniper scrub across 17,632 acres and favoring the growth of grasses."

I love this trail. After the cramped and crowded trails in the Zion canyon, we finally got to go exploring somewhere where we weren't rubbing shoulders with 3/4 of the population of the southwest...and the southeast, and the northwest and the northeast, and the other 4 corners of the earth. Of course, there's a reason people flock to Zion from all over, but...I just need a little more space. Next time, maybe shouldn't go during spring break. But this place, Coalpit wash, no one seems to know about. The views aren't quite so spectacular, but this is a beautiful red, sandy wash, with willows and cottonwoods blowing in the breeze, and a babbling brook. The boys went swimming and we kicked back and did a little birding. And tracks, I've never seen anything like this anywhere. There's a network of tracks, all shapes and sizes, leading to and fro every which way. This is a great place to just linger and let the day slip by.
