Oak to Aspen

Oak to Aspen Professional Review and Guide

"This nine-mile ride, though it may not inspire you to write home, is definitely worth doing if you’re in the area. It’s a straightforward 4.5 miles up and 4.5 miles back, over graded two-wheel-drive road, as well as some sandy/rocky semi-four-wheel-drive road and a short stretch of single-track. It’s moderately difficult aerobically, due to the extended uphill on which you gain 1,200 vertical feet, but technically it’s quite easy. Beginning amid a dry setting of scrub oak and juniper—that rustle you hear in the brush is an acorn-gathering squirrel, not a cougar . . . you hope—by the final stretches you’re riding in shimmering aspen forest.

At the turnaround point, Salt Spring Creek, you may note a Carsonite marker on the other side of the creek marking a trail going both left and right. Feel free to explore by foot to the left, up toward Mahogany Hill; in addition or instead, if you’re feeling adventurous and still have plenty of water, you may choose to investigate by bike going down to the right, just to see where you end up."
