The Barracks Zion National Park

The Barracks (Zion National Park) Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A wilderness route down the East Fork of the Virgin River through spectacular canyon country, then out via a difficult scramble over a poorly marked route. This route follows the East Fork of the Virgin River into Parunuweap Canyon, one
of the most spectacular and unknown canyons in southwestern Utah. The upper reaches of the canyon are open and fairly arid, while The Barracks’ lower end is made up of slot canyons with towering walls.

The cleft lay along John Wesley Powell’s route during his explorations of the early 1870s. Powell’s party took several weeks to lead a string of pack mules through the canyon, working its way past obstacles such as Labyrinth Falls, now considered impassable without mountaineering gear."

"This short spur trail leads from Elephant Butte Trail to an overlook of the East Fork Virgin River. The trail is sandy and ungraded, and it winds through scattered vegetation. After 3.3 miles, there is a spectacular, shaded campsite on the edge of the cliff, with views over Zion National Park and the White Cliffs. Special Attractions: Views of Zion National Park and the White Cliffs; Overlook of the Virgin River; Fun, sandy trail. High-clearance 4WDs are recommended, though most stock SUVs are acceptable. Expect a rough road surface with rocks larger than 6 inches, but there will be a reasonable driving line available. Patches of mud are possible but can be readily negotiated; sand may be deep and require lower tire pressures. There may be stream crossings up to 12 inches deep, substantial sections of single-lane shelf road, moderate grades, and sections of moderately loose road surface." Read more

This trail has some beautiful views of the red-colored mountains and cliffs and goes along a river. There are some areas that you may need to walk through water that can be anywhere from shallow to up to your chest. It can be sandy in some areas so might be more difficult if you're not used to walking on sand. There's a nice amount of trees as well along the way. If you get a chance, stop off in the quaint little town of Kanab where many old Westerns were filmed, and the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is headquartered.
